Speech Therapy
What is speech-language pathology? Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are professionals who specialize in evaluation and treatment of speech, language, cognitive, voice and swallowing disorders. All SLP services are performed or supervised by licensed SLPs with a master's degree in speech pathology, and a certificate of clinical competence.
Stevens Hospital SLPs provide the following services:
- Clinical swallow evaluation and treatment.
- Cognitive evaluation and treatment, including attention, problem solving and executive functioning skills.
- Hearing screenings.
- Language evaluation and treatment to assess or treat verbal and graphic expression and reading and auditory comprehension.
- Modified barium swallow studies—objective swallow study done by an SLP and radiologist via fluoroscopy.
- Speech evaluation and treatment, including apraxia, dysarthria and stuttering.
- Training and education for patients and caregivers regarding swallow management and compensatory strategies for speech or swallowing.
- Voice evaluation and treatment, including functional, neurological and surgically based disorders.
