Campaign for Digital Mammography: New Dimensions
In 2005 the results of a multi-center study comparing film-screen (standard) mammography to digital mammography were released. While the overall
accuracy for film-screen mammography and digital mammography were the same, digital mammography had higher accuracy in three specific groups of women. These were women less that 50 years of age, those with heterogeneously to extremely dense breasts, and pre- or perimenopausal women. These findings were corroborated by a second study, whose results were released in November 2006.
Beyond the improved diagnostic accuracy for these groups of women, digital mammography allows easier access to the breast images and computer aided diagnosis information. It allows the Breast Center to become filmless and to improve transmission, retrieval and storage of images.
With the exception of Stevens, all other Puget Sound hospital-affiliated breast centers have digital technology. The women we serve deserve the same quality of care available at other centers. We have worked hard develop a Breast Center of which we are proud, and a loyal clientele. We have all the same capabilities in breast imaging and intervention as other centers, save digital mammography. It is our ardent wish that we be able to offer our women the best care available—and that includes digital mammography.
Digital mammography is expensive technology. Stevens Hospital has challenged the Foundation to match a $500,000 commitment to the purchase of digital mammography. Your generous donation will help us meet this challenge. Thank you for your support!
